RED SOX

Hernandez out for season

BOSTON -- Red Sox infielder Marco Hernandez will be out the rest of the season after having surgery on his left shoulder.

The team says the procedure was performed Friday by Dr. Tom Holovacs in Boston.

Hernandez was put on the disabled list May 4 with a left shoulder misalignment. The 24-year-old hit .276 with two RBI in 21 games.

NATIONALS

Raburn acquired from Sox

In the wake of Chris Heisey's significant biceps injury, the Washington Nationals added more potential bench help Friday when they acquired outfielder Ryan Raburn from the White Sox organization in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Raburn, 36, had been hitting .253 for the Class AAA Charlotte Knights with a .417 on-base percentage. He will report to Class AAA Syracuse, where he can be called upon to bolster the Nationals bench at any time, should they decide they need to add to what is a depleted stock of right-handed hitters.

Raburn is a .253 career hitter in parts of 11 major league seasons, and played in 113 games for the Rockies last season. Most importantly for the Nationals' purposes, Raburn has an .835 OPS against left-handed pitching.

Without Heisey, the Nationals' bench currently consists of Adam Lind, Wilmer Difo, Brian Goodwin and Jose Lobaton, as they wait for infielder Stephen Drew to return from a hamstring injury. Even when he does, the Nationals will lack a proven right-handed hitter off the bench, a role Raburn could fill if needed.

ATHLETICS

Graveman headed to DL

NEW YORK -- Oakland pitcher Kendall Graveman was scratched from his start at Yankee Stadium on Friday night and likely is headed to the disabled list along with fellow Athletics right-hander Jesse Hahn.

Manager Bob Melvin said both have ailing shoulders -- further injuries to add to a long list of them already this season for the low-budget, ever-changing club.

Left-hander Sean Manaea, who missed three weeks with a strained left shoulder before returning May 15, moved up a day and took Graveman's place Friday. Right-hander Jharel Cotton, demoted to the minors on May 11, will be recalled from Class AAA Nashville and start today.

Oakland ace Sonny Gray missed the first month with a lat strain, and reliever Sean Doolittle hasn't pitched since April due to a strained left shoulder.

"It's happened to basically everybody," Melvin said, citing Andrew Triggs as the healthy exception. "It doesn't help things."

WHITE SOX

Shields ready for rehab

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox starter James Shields said he is just about ready to go on a rehab assignment.

The 35-year-old right-hander threw a 30-pitch bullpen session for the second time in three days on Friday. He said he plans to throw again on Monday, then make one or two rehab starts before returning from the 10-day disabled list.

Shields has been sidelined since April 16 by a strained right back muscle. Coming off a rough first season with Chicago, Shields is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in three starts.

Chicago also placed struggling rookie Dylan Covey (strained left oblique) on the 10-day DL and recalled right-hander Juan Minaya from Class AAA Charlotte. Covey is 0-4 with an 8.12 ERA in eight starts.

DODGERS

Lasorda gets new pacemaker

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda underwent surgery Thursday to replace the pacemaker in his heart.

The procedure was confirmed by the Dodgers on Friday morning. The team added in a release that Lasorda is "doing well and looking forward to returning to Dodger Stadium."

Lasorda, 89, has been hospitalized for more than two weeks and has a history of heart problems. He was hospitalized following a heart attack in 2012 and received his first pacemaker at that time.

Lasorda has been hospitalized multiple times in the past year, including after a fall while attending a memorabilia show in Atlantic City in August and then again for 10 days with multiple issues in October. But he was released in time to attend Game 3 of the National League Championship Series between the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium, where he received his usual ovation when introduced to the crowd.

Lasorda is in his 68th season with the Dodgers, serving as special advisor to the chairman after years as a player, scout, minor league manager, major league manager and even briefly as interim general manager.
