• Joe Biden, the former vice president, in a convocation address at Cornell University, asserted that the country's current trend toward "fringe ideologies" is a "temporary state of affairs" that the American people will not tolerate for long.

• Mark Kramer, spokesman for the Channelview Independent School District near Houston, where a 13-year-old girl was given a mock award naming her "most likely to become a terrorist," told KPRC-TV that the certificate was a "poor attempt to poke fun" and that several teachers have been disciplined.

• Pat Llodra, 75, who holds the highest elected office in Newtown, Conn., and led the town through the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, announced she is stepping down as first selectman but will remain active in local politics.

• Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, was quoted by the semiofficial Fars news agency as calling Saudi Arabia a "cow being milked" by the United States and that the "stupid" Saudi government trades its wealth for friendship.

• Tori Lee Castillo, 39, of Riverdale, Utah, was jailed on suspicion of child abuse, police say, after locking her two children, ages 5 and 2, in the trunk of her car while she went into a Wal-Mart to shop.

• Orlando Melendez, 20, representing himself in a Springfield, Mass., trial on an allegation that he used a toy gun to try to rob a convenience store in December, asked the judge to let him juggle for jurors to show that he's a real clown whose store antics were misunderstood, but his request was denied.

• Tun Lon Sein, 22, is in a federal lockup, accused of interfering with a flight crew, after he struggled with a flight attendant, then opened an exit door and jumped off an American Airlines flight that had pulled away from the gate for takeoff at a North Carolina airport, authorities said.

• Joseph Andrew Floyd Jr., 20, and Zachary Lloyd Brown, 21, who admitted to police that they poured beer down a young alligator's throat and posted photos of it on social media, were charged with harassing wildlife.

• Jessica Gomez, who bought Jelly Belly's Sport Beans thinking they were an energizing snack for athletes, has filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, saying the ingredients label is deceptive because instead of sugar it lists "evaporated cane juice" to make it sound less like candy.
