SOCCER

Arkansas advances to semifinals

Tori Cannata scored in the 53rd minute to give the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville at 1-0 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday in the SEC women's semifinals at Orange Beach, Ala.

Cannata deflected in a shot from Kayla McKeon in the middle of the penalty box for her first goal of the year.

Arkansas won despite being outshot 20-3.

Arkansas (11-9-1) will meet either Vanderbilt or Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

GOLF

Baker, Hargraves win senior title

Bobby Baker of Little Rock and Bev Hargraves of Helena-West Helena blitzed the Jack Fleck Division of the eighth annual Senior Team Championship on Tuesday at War Memorial Golf Course in Little Rock.

The team won the event with a 5-under par score 123. They had a 3-under 29 in the better ball first round, another 3-under 29 in the modified alternate shot round and shot a 1-over 65 in the stroke play final.

Fred Stamey of Hot Springs Village and partner Gregg Connell of Russellville tied Kirby Webb and Curtis Savoy, both of Little Rock, for second place at 136.

In the Ben Hogan Division, Cal Campbell and Ed Tallach of Hot Springs edged the Arkadelphia team of Max Brown and Jackie Smith by one shot with a 140 score. Glen Talbert of Sheridan and Sam McAllister of Bryant were third with a 142.

Defending champions Jay Fox and Wyn Norwood did not defend their 2016 championship, when the event was played at Belvedere Country Club in Hot Springs.

UCA men finish third at El Dorado

The University of Central Arkansas' men's team finished third Tuesday in the Duck Commander Intercollegiate at Mystic Creek in El Dorado.

The Bears finished with a 926, while North Carolina-Wilmington won with a 916 and Louisiana Tech was second with a 923. Arkansas State University finished fifth with a 930 and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was seventh with a 933.

Individually, UCA's Lewis George finished second with a with 224 (75-72-77), two strokes behind North Carolina-Wilmington's Patrick Cover's 222 (70-74-78). UALR's Justin Warren finished tied for fourth with a 226 (80-70-76). Arkansas State's Tanner Napier tied for ninth with a 233 (75-81-77).

UCA women second at Hot Springs Village.

The University of Central Arkansas' women's team finished second at the Little Rock Golf Classic at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village on Tuesday. The Bears shot a 911, finishing three strokes back of Missouri State (908). Arkansas State University was ninth (919) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was tied for 11th with a 937.

Individually, Central Arkansas' Emma Svensson finished tied for fifth with a 224 (73-73-78) -- four strokes behind Missouri State's Verena Gimmy, who won with a 220. Arkansas State's Sarah Childers (72-76-77) and Aracelly Jimenez Rios (73-78-74) tied for eighth with a 225. UALR's Sabrina Bonanno finished tied for 16th with a 229 (76-74-79).

UAM finishes second in Texas

The University of Arkansas at Monticello's men's team finished second Tuesday at The Classic at Firewheel at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas.

The Boll Weevils shot a 915, placing them 28 strokes behind Texas A&M-Commerce.

Individually, Stephane Perrin of UAM finished tied for fourth with a 223 (72-73-78), five strokes back of Wilfredo Sanchez of Texas A&M-Commerce, who won with a 218.

BASKETBALL

Harding women third in national poll

Harding University's women's team was ranked third in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll released Tuesday.

Harding, which reached in the national semifinals in NCAA Division II last season with a 31-4 record after winning the Great American Conference regular-season championship, returns four starters from last year's team

Harding opens the season Nov. 10 in Kansas City against Northern (S.D.) State.

VOLLEYBALL

Arkansas Tech wins 29th consecutive

Arkansas Tech University defeated the University of Arkansas at Monticello 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday night in Monticello for its 29th consecutive victory.

Hunter Eshnaur and Allie Anderson led Arkansas Tech (29-0, 13-0 Great American Conference) with 12 kills. Amanda Milnick had 41 assists and Madison Nagel had 17 digs.

Arkansas-Monticello (10-18, 2-11) was led by Maggie Pyles, who had 13 kills. Troyn Cox had 28 assists and Macy Mitchell had 15 digs.

Harding wins 11th in a row

Harding University won its 11th consecutive match when the Lady Bisons defeated Southern Arkansas University 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 in Searcy on Tuesday.

Harding (24-3, 12-1 GAC) was led by Taylor Mounts, who had 18 kills. Rachel Heussner had 38 assists.

Southern Arkansas (8-20, 1-12) was led by Alexia Southern, who had seven kills. Alexa Bass had 19 assists and 12 digs.
