27-year-old Arkansan accused of shooting dog

An Arkansas man remains jailed more than a week after his arrest on animal-cruelty charges, authorities said.

The Cleburne County sheriff's office said Thursday that deputies responded to a complaint Oct. 15 on Sager Road in West Pangburn. When they arrived, they were told that 27-year-old Jacob James had taken a rifle to a neighbor's house, according to a news release.

The complainant reported that he had heard a few gunshots, then saw James carry off a dog that appeared to be deceased, the sheriff's office said.

The witness told officers that the dog had had puppies a few days before, the release stated. Some of the puppies were also said to be missing, and one was reportedly later found dead.

Authorities said James had a previous felony conviction in Arkansas.

He was arrested Oct. 23 on four counts of animal cruelty and one count of possession of a firearm by a certain person and remained at the Cleburne County jail Thursday morning.
