Arkansan who bought gun used in double homicide gets federal prison term

An Arkansas man has been sentenced to 16 months in a federal prison for making a false statement when purchasing a firearm that was later used in a 2015 double slaying, authorities said.

Talmadge Beigh Pendergrass, 28, of Gassville, pleaded guilty earlier this year to making a straw purchase of a handgun at Harps Food Store in Mountain Home in 2015, according to a Friday news release from the Baxter County sheriff's office.

He was sentenced Oct. 26, the release said.

The weapon was reportedly purchased by Pendergrass on Nov. 6, 2015.

The next day, 25-year-old Nicholas Ian Roos used that handgun to kill Donald Rice, 75, and Ladonna Rice, 71, in their home, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

Video evidence from the store showed that Roos handed Pendergrass cash to purchase the firearm on his behalf after Roos' application was denied, the release said.

Pendergrass was indicted on a false-statement charge in January, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.
