Greenbrier topples Vilonia, takes 1 seed

VILONIA -- Greenbrier Panthers Coach Randy Tribble had more uncertainties and scenarios than he cared for going into the season finale at rival Vilonia on Friday night.

But after the Panthers' 34-6 victory, Tribble discovered the best scenario had played out. With Maumelle's 35-31 victory over Alma, Greenbrier earned a share of the 5A-West title and the top seed for the playoffs, which begin next week.

"If we won, we were a two seed at least,'' Tribble said. "So it's good. We get a home playoff game since we won. We will go find out who we play.

"There are some things we can clean up. We wasted some series, and I think we can clean up some tackling, but we played pretty good."

"You never can tell when you come over here,'' Tribble said. "It's a rivalry game, and they are kind of out of it. You don't ever know what is going to happen, and you try and say the right thing to your kids all week, but human nature sometimes overcomes them.

"You never know. Sometimes they play real well and throw the whole book at you and do something different than what they have been doing."

Greenbrier gained control on its first possession. Grant Brown grabbed a 3-yard fourth-down pass from junior Andrew Johnson for the first touchdown with 8:16 left in the first quarter. The extra-point attempt was missed.

The Eagles' Clay Kellett recovered a fumble to set up a nice drive for Vilonia, but it ended when Reese Hammontree blocked a field goal try. Hammontree had pass receptions of 43 and 35 yards, the second one a for a touchdown, as the Panthers made it 13-0 with Ethan Hall's extra point.

It was 20-0 at the half after Spencer Sutterfield scored on a 4-yard run with 51 seconds left in the second quarter.

Vilonia looked to make a game of it in the third quarter, taking its first drive 52 yards and ending it with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cody Mitchell.

Sutterfield added a second score on a 5-yard run with 10:45 left, and Seth Howard capped the scoring with a 38-yard run.
