Little Rock police officer struck by vehicle while working off-duty

A Little Rock Police Department officer who was hit by a vehicle early Sunday is in serious but stable condition, authorities said.

It happened about 12:40 a.m. outside 1102 W. Daisy Gatson Bates Drive, where off-duty officers were providing security for an event, according to a release from the Little Rock Police Department.

A group of people were reportedly trying to enter the building after the doors were closed. When the officers refused to let the group inside, they “became upset” and “began yelling profanities at the officers,” the release said.

After officers led the group across the street, 24-year-old Daryl Johnson continued to refuse orders to leave, police said. He was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct, and Lt. Johnny Gilbert began escorting him across the street, according to the release.

As they were crossing, a maroon vehicle struck both men and continued driving, police said. The two were transported to a local hospital, Gilbert with critical injuries and Johnson with minor ones.

On Sunday afternoon, Gilbert was in serious, but stable condition.

No suspect description was available. The investigation is ongoing.
