A 28-year-old who shot an Arkansas man six times was convicted of manslaughter and fleeing Thursday, according to an Arkansas prosecutor’s office.
In a news release Friday, the office of prosecuting attorney Scott Ellington said Justin East was given a 25-year prison sentence for his role in the shooting.
The killing happened in May 2016. After getting in a fight with 40-year-old Dedrick Meadows, East pulled out a .32 caliber revolver and fired, the release stated. Four bullets hit Meadows in the back as he ran away.
East left the scene and threw the revolver out the window as he fled West Memphis police officers, the prosecutor's office said.
In addition to manslaughter and fleeing, the Crittenden County jury found East guilty of tampering with evidence and using a firearm to commit a felony.
In court, the West Memphis resident claimed the killing was in self-defense.
