A man is accused of beating his girlfriend’s dog in Arkansas earlier this year, leaving the animal severely hurt, court filings show.
Mason Pitts, 24, of Ponca City, Okla., was arrested Saturday on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty.
On May 12, Pitts’ girlfriend told police that her corgi had been abused two days earlier, according to an affidavit filed in Washington County Circuit Court.
The dog was found “traumatized” under a bed and had difficulty breathing, authorities said. The corgi had suffered a complete femur fracture and was diagnosed with a collapsed lung.
Pitts kicked the animal out of anger when it tried to bite him, the 24-year-old reportedly told his girlfriend during a text conversation.
While speaking with an officer, Pitts reiterated that account, telling authorities that he “really hates that dog” and that he didn’t think much about kicking the animal after he left his girlfriend’s apartment.
Pitts admitted to kicking the dog once, though a veterinarian noted that the injuries were the result of “multiple blunt force traumas,” the affidavit states.
Records show Pitts was booked into the Washington County jail around 7:45 a.m. Saturday and released nearly three hours later on $2,500 bail.
