Off-road crashes fatal to 2 drivers

A 53-year-old Batesville man died Thursday morning when his car ran off a state highway, went airborne and struck a culvert, the Arkansas State Police said.

Jaime Rodriguez was driving west on Arkansas 18 through Jackson County in a 2017 Honda Accord when the vehicle left the road near the intersection with Arkansas 384, according to a crash report.

The car then went airborne and hit a culvert.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

Earlier in the week, a 59-year-old California man was killed when his truck crashed into a median of Interstate 40, authorities said.

State police reported the single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday when an eastbound 2016 Freightliner crashed off the left side of the highway and struck a tree. The crash occurred around mile marker 199 in Prairie County, which is east of the Hazen exit and near the White River, according to a crash report.

The driver, Balkar Singh of Fresno, Calif., suffered fatal injuries, the report said. No one else was listed as being hurt.

The reports didn't indicate what may have caused either vehicle to leave the road. The weather was clear and roads were dry at the time of both crashes, state police reported.
