McIntosh, Lindsey lead Northwestern to victory

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Bryant McIntosh and his Northwestern teammates put forth a strong defensive effort in the first half to help them beat La Salle.

McIntosh scored 21 points and Scottie Lindsey added 20 to lead the No. 20 Wildcats to an 82-74 victory over La Salle in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

"In the first half we came out ready to play," said McIntosh, who hit five three-pointers and had seven assists. "We really defended and held them to 24 points."

The Wildcats (3-1) advance to play Texas Tech in today's championship. Northwestern has not won an in-season tournament since the 2013 South Padre Island Invitational.

Derek Pardon added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats. Aaron Falzon chipped in 11 points.

Northwestern made 12 of 21 three-point attempts and shot 56 percent from the field. It was the second consecutive game the Wildcats made a dozen three-pointers after going 12 of 28 against Creighton.

"We have a good shooting team, especially now when you add Aaron Falzon," Northwestern Coach Chris Collins said. "We have a number of guys out there that can come in there and do that."

After suffering its first loss of the season to Creighton, 92-88 on Wednesday, Northwestern struggled early against the Explorers (3-1). Tied 13-13, the Wildcats loosened up with a 9-1 run that was capped by Lindsey's layup at 9:38 to make it 22-14.

Northwestern dominated inside and out the rest of the first half on the way to a 46-24 lead.

"I thought we had great energy in the first half," Collins said. "We built the lead and I thought we executed really well, made shots."

B.J. Johnson led La Salle with 22 points and seven rebounds. Johnson scored 15 points in the second half as the Explorers tried to come back from a double-digit deficit by shooting 67.9 percent (19-for-28).

"They are a really good team and it's always hard to play a really good team after a loss," La Salle Coach John Giannini said. "We were excited. We were ready. We did everything right in the first part of the first half except make wide open shots."

Northwestern shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) overall in the first half to La Salle's 31.3 percent (10-for-32).

In other Top 25 games Saturday, Desi Rodriguez scored 19 points and No. 22 Seton Hall used an 18-2 second-half run to shake off pesky New Jersey Institute of Technology and post an 82-53 victory. Sophomore Myles Powell added 13 points and freshman Myles Cale had a threepoint basket and a three-point play in the big run in helping the Pirates (4-0) win their 20th consecutive non-conference game at the Prudential Center. Cale finished with 11 points. Khadeen Carrington added nine points as the Pirates beat NJIT for the sixth time in as many games. The big surprise was center Angel Delgado being held to five points and two rebounds in 16 minutes, playing only 2 minutes in the second half. Freshman Sando Mamukelashvili filled in well for Delgado, collecting 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots... Dakota Mathias, Vince Edwards and P.J Thompson combined for 46 firsthalf points and No. 19 Purdue made 13 of 18 shots from three-point range before halftime, crushing Fairfield 106-64 in West Lafayette, Ind. Mathias, Edwards and Thompson — all seniors — were a collective 13 of 15 from beyond the arc during the first 20 minutes when the Boilermakers (4-0) built a commanding 58-28 lead against the previously unbeaten Stags (2-1). At the half, Mathias had 18 points, Edwards 16 and Thompson 12. Mathias finished with a game-best 23 points, and Vince Edwards had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Carsen Edwards scored 18 with 6 assists and Thompson finished with 12 points. … Daxter Miles had a career-high 32 points to lead No. 24 West Virginia in a 111-48 victory over Morgan State. The Mountaineers (2-1) had control from the start, opening the game with a 14-3 run. WVU finished the game shooting 45 of 77 (58 percent) from the field. Jevon Carter added 16 points for West Virginia while Beetle Bolden had 13 points and freshman Teddy Allen added 10. ... Killian Tillie scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as No. 17 Gonzaga beat Utah State 79-66 in Spokane, Wash. Corey Kispert and Silas Melson each scored 12 points for Gonzaga (3-0). Sam Merrill scored 19 points for Utah State (2-2), which shot 39 percent in the game. Utah State was scoreless for nearly 6 minutes and made only 2 field goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. Gonzaga has held 59 consecutive opponents to under 50 percent shooting from the field.
