State index edges up 0.76; ArcBest jumps

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 0.76 to 390.95 Tuesday.

"The financial markets closed higher with the S&P 500 Index breaking through the 2,600-point barrier for the first time as a strong round of corporate earnings pushed the major averages to record levels," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

ArcBest shares were up 5.24% and hit a 52-week high, Williams said.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
