'Distinction' violinist stays to play Tchaikovsky sextet

Violinist Jennifer Frautschi, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra's 2017-2018 Richard Sheppard Arnold Artist of Distinction, will join orchestra members Geoffrey Robson, violin; Ryan Mooney and Katherine Reynolds, viola; and David Gerstein and Ethan Young, cello, to play the Sextet, "Souvenir de Florence," op.70, by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky in the opening concert of the orchestra's 2017-2018 River Rhapsodies Chamber Music Series, 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock.

Frautschi, who is soloing with the orchestra and conductor Philip Mann in the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius in the second of two Masterworks concerts, 3 p.m. today at Little Rock's Robinson Center Performance Hall, will also play the "Chaconne" from J.S. Bach's Partita No. 2 in d minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1004.

The Etesian Winds -- orchestra members Diane McVinney, flute; Beth Wheeler, oboe; Kelly Johnson, clarinet; Susan Leon, bassoon; and David Renfro, horn -- will open the program with Winter Music for Woodwind Quintet by ASO Composer of the Year Adam Schoenberg, and an arrangement by Valerie Coleman for woodwind quintet of the spiritual Steal Away.

'More Brahms'

Violinist Kiril Laskarov, co-concertmaster of the Arkansas Symphony, and pianist Mary Scott Goode will perform Johannes Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, op.78, and the three Intermezzos for piano, 7 p.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 310 W. 17th St., Little Rock. The program title, "More Brahms," reflects that the recital follows the orchestra's performance of Brahms' First Symphony over the weekend. Admission is $10, free for students with ID. Potter performances

It's a busy musical weekend coming up for Harry Potter fans:

• The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will put on concerts titled "The Magical Music of Harry Potter," 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Robinson Center Performance Hall, 426 W. Markham St. at Broadway, Little Rock. The program will feature music from all eight Harry Potter films by John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. Philip Mann conducts. • And a live orchestra that includes members of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas will perform Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in Concert, every note of John Williams' score for the film while it appears on a 40-foot screen above the musicians, 7 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart AMP, 5079 W. Veterans of Comedy

The Veterans of Comedy -- founder Will C, Erik Knowles and Brett James, all touring comedians who have served in the armed forces and who have made it their mission to entertain veterans and active-duty military -- will be onstage, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Loony Bin Comedy Club, Breckenridge Village Shopping Center, Interstate 430 and North Rodney Parham Road. Fit to be Thai-ed

The Lincoln Center Theater's touring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I will be onstage at Fayetteville's Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St., 7 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, 1:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Oct. 8. Silhouette troupe

Catapult, a dance troupe that works behind a screen to create silhouettes of shapes -- mountain, elephant, dragon, even a helicopter -- will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Alma Performing Arts Center, 103 E. African cirque

Cirque Zuma Zuma, a cirque troupe of acrobats, street performers and circus acts from 16 African countries that reached the finals of television's America's Got Talent, opens the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council's 2017-2018 performing arts season, 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hempstead Hall, University of Arkansas at Hope, 2500 S. Printmaking exhibition

"Pushing the Ink: An Exploration of Printmaking," including works by eight artists who print together at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock-- Shane Baskins, Maria Castro, Shannon Frazier, Judy Henderson, Michelle Gunter Moore, Daniella Napolitano, Jackie Sheppard and Miranda Young -- goes on display Monday at Christ Episcopal Church, 509 Scott St., Little Rock. Tuba and trombone

Patrick Sheridan, tuba, and Harry Watters, trombone, will solo with the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Symphonic Band, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center, Fort Smith Convention Center, 55 S. Seventh St., Fort Smith.

The program will include works by John Philip Sousa and George Grainger and a musical journey through New Orleans. Alexandra Zacharella conducts. Mempho Fest

Cage the Elephant, Cold War Kids, Bishop Briggs and Southern Avenue will be among the Friday performers, while Saturday's lineup includes Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Anderson.Paak & The Free Nationals, Robert Randolph and The Family Band, Hard Working Americans and the Booker T. Stax Revue for the inaugural two-day Mempho Fest, celebrating the soul, music, food and nature of Memphis.
