A Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Little Rock’s Riverdale neighborhood is set to close early next month, the store said this week.

The Arkansas-based retailer opened the location in the Riverdale Shopping Center at 2510 Cantrell Road in July 2012, and at the time it hired about 90 employees.

The location will close Nov. 2, according to flyers posted at entrances. In the weeks leading up to its closing, store hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In an emailed statement, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman referenced seven Wal-Mart stores within 8 miles of the Neighborhood Market location.

"The decision to close the Cantrell Road Neighborhood Market is not an easy one, and is in no way a reflection of the hard work and customer service provided by the leadership and associates at the store," the statement reads in part.

The 65,000-square-foot store, about three miles from the heart of downtown Little Rock, is roughly 50 percent larger than the typical Neighborhood Market, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

Wal-Mart invested more than it typically does to open the Riverdale outlet, with 45,000 square feet devoted to food and the remaining 20,000 square feet reserved for general merchandise, according to the newspaper.

Before the Neighborhood Market, a Harvest Foods once occupied the building.

The store advises shoppers to shop at its two nearby Neighborhood Market locations: one in Sherwood at 8801 Arkansas 107 and another in North Little Rock at 4450 E. McCain Blvd.

A message left seeking comment from a representative for the shopping center was not immediately returned Friday morning.
