Arkansas man, 47, drowns after boat capsizes on river

MOUNTAIN HOME -- A Mountain View man fell from a flipped boat in the White River on Friday and drowned, Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery said.

Rescue workers found the body of John V. Webb, 47, near the Bull Shoals Lake dam at 2:39 p.m. Friday after members of the Norfork Fire Department used its rescue boat to search for him.

Montgomery said deputies received a call at 1 p.m. Friday that two men had fallen from a boat that had flipped on the White River near Buffalo City. David Hopper, 74, of Mountain View swam to Smith Island in the river. Another boater found Hopper and took him to White-Buffalo Resort where emergency services were called, Montgomery said.

Witnesses said Webb was last seen attempting to swim to the Marion County side of the river.

Montgomery said four generators were in operation at the dam, churning the water.

Webb's body was found about a mile and a quarter from where the boat capsized.
