WINNING AT TUTORING

Literacy advocates spotlight top learner, teacher at event

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas put the spotlight on its tutors and students at the ninth annual Shine a Light on Literacy fundraiser, held Sept. 29 at Next Level Events.

The inaugural Student of the Year award went to Christina Cook. Horace Smith was named the Bridget Fennel Farris Outstanding Tutor award winner.

The evening included drinks and a buffet of pepperoncini beef sliders, Florentine spread with pita chips, cheese and crackers and fresh fruit. A silent auction included more than 20 autographed books, tickets to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, vacation packages and airline tickets. Entertainment was by The Jellies.

A short program included student speakers Christina Page and Celine Riviere Jerez, and tutor Marjorie Swann. Tom Brannon served as the evening's host.

Last year, volunteer tutors contributed more than 11,000 hours. Literacy Action volunteers teach reading and English language skills to adults through programs including Adult Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language and local community partner organizations, which help build literacy programs in communities. In 2018, Literacy Action will begin a pilot family literacy program titled Project Lift (Literacy Inspiring Family Transformation).
