Movie at MacArthur

The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock, will screen the documentary Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History, a look at warfare, disability and the physical and psychological toll of violent conflict, 6:30-8:30 p.m. today. FireFest at mall

The North Little Rock Fire Department will host the seventh annual FireFest, 5-8 p.m. today in the south parking lot of McCain Mall, 3929 McCain Blvd., North Little Rock. Area fire departments will educate families on fire safety for Fire Prevention Week (which is through Saturday); FireFest activities include games, fire truck demonstrations, free eye screenings by the Lions Club, a children's safety smokehouse and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission aquarium. UALR exhibitions

"Creating Youth," highlighting the steps sculptor and University of Arkansas at Little Rock faculty member Michael Warrick took to create a bronze work titled Youth, opens Wednesday in the Maners/Pappas Gallery, Fine Arts Building, UALR, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock.

Also going on display Wednesday, in Fine Arts Gallery III: "Estamos Aqui (We Are Here)," serigraphs by contemporary artists exploring Hispanic and Latin American culture and heritage, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Humanities "Big Read" project and curated by UALR Gallery Director Brad Cushman.

The university will hold a reception for both exhibitions, 2-4 p.m. Saturday. They'll remain on display through Nov. 10. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Call (501) 569-8977 or email becushman@ualr.edu.

Champion premiere

Fayetteville company TheatreSquared will stage the world premiere production of The Champion by Amy Evans, based on true events in the life of Nina Simone, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday through Nov. 5 at Walton Arts Center's Nadine Baum Studios, 505 W. Spring St., Fayetteville. The show, which contains occasional adult language and is recommended for ages 13 and up, runs 80 minutes with no intermission.

Archival activities

Consulting historian and journalist Erik Wright, assistant editor at the National Tombstone Epitaph and director of the Greene County Office of Emergency Management in Paragould, will give a lecture titled "Main Street Mayhem: Crime, Murder and Justice in Downtown Paragould," 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock. The lecture is part of the museum's and the Arkansas State Archives' Pen to Podium: Arkansas Historical Writers' Lecture Series. A reception sponsored by the Friends of the Arkansas State Archives will precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the museum atrium.
