FORT SMITH -- Mayor J. H. Wright tonight was found guilty by a jury of the charge of making a pre-election promise and was fined $50. The conviction will remove him from office upon court order. No order was entered tonight. It was agreed that this should not be done until tomorrow. The conviction will be appealed. The jury deliberated about two hours. Mayor Wright was charged with promising to support John H. Vaughn for city attorney in exchange for the support of Mr. Vaughn and his friends in the city general election last spring.

CONWAY -- Some students at State College of Arkansas here turned a Tech Week pep rally into a "disorganized panty raid" about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Conway Police Department. Sgt. Vonnie Taylor said security officers at the College called the Police Department to ask for assistance. He said the situation was "nearly under control" at midnight. Frank Koon, dean of Men at SCA, said at midnight that he didn't have any details. "If anything happened, I don't know about it," he said. "It wasn't serious enough to call me out."

• A Little Rock man received a 50-year prison sentence Monday for bursting into a couple's home in December and holding them hostage after escaping from police. Paul Jerome Spiers, 33, of 2905 Cumberland St. entered a negotiated guilty plea in Pulaski County Circuit Court to seven felonies stemming from the Dec. 2, 1991, incident. Bill and Becky Caldwell told the Arkansas Democrat Gazette last year that they prayed for Spiers as he held a stolen police revolver on them for three hours before surrendering to police.

DUMAS -- A 10-year-old Dumas boy, who police say took a school bus and led police on a 45-mile chase on Oct. 6, was charged with several offenses in juvenile court Friday, authorities said. The boy, a fourth-grade student at Dumas Elementary School, was charged in the juvenile division of Desha County Circuit Court with breaking and entering, theft of property, fleeing and reckless driving, said Michelle Haugie, an assistant administrator with the Dumas Police Department.
