STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State turned its whiteout into a knockout of Michigan.

Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley cut through one of the nation's stingiest defenses, each scoring three touchdowns, and the No. 2 Nittany Lions emphatically avenged its last regular-season loss with a 42-13 victory against the 19th-ranked Wolverines on Saturday night.

Barkley set the tone the first time he touched the ball. He took a direct snap on the second play of the game and blazed 69 yards for a touchdown on his way to 161 yards from scrimmage that are a nice addition to his Heisman Trophy bid.

"Obviously we knew they were very aggressive. They're a great defense, got a great defensive coordinator," Barkley said. "Sometimes it seems like a heavyweight fight. They're going to get some and we're going to get ours. When you got your opportunity, you got to score."

McSorley ran for three touchdowns for Penn State (7-0, 4-0), including a 13-yarder in the third quarter that made it 28-13 and led the record-breaking, white-out crowd of 110,823 at Beaver Stadium to sing along to "Sweet Caroline." McSorley and Barkley combined for the shot that pretty much put Michigan away, a 42-yard TD pass with Barkley burning linebacker Mike McCray and then making a juggling catch to make it 35-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Michigan (5-2, 2-2) came in allowing 223 yards per game and 3.68 yards per play. Nittany Lions went for 506 yards and 8.3 per play, adding a few new looks to its offense, like the wildcat formation Barkley broke for the game's first touchdown.

"Instead of lining up and sending the quarterback out wide we shifted to it at the last minute so they couldn't go to a wildcat check," Penn State Coach James Franklin said. "We had some wrinkles in there."

NO. 5 WISCONSIN 38,

MARYLAND 13

MADISON, Wis. — Jonathan Taylor ran for a touchdown and broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season, Alex Hornibrook passed for two scores and Wisconsin (7-0, 4-0) stayed unbeaten with a victory over Maryland.

Taylor carried 22 times for 126 yards, a relatively ho-hum day after two consecutive 200-yard outings for the running back.

Taylor, playing in his seventh college game, tied a major college football record shared by five other backs for fewest games to reach 1,000 yards. Hornibrook shook off an interception on his second attempt, finishing 16 of 24 for 225 yards to balance the offense. Maryland (3-4, 1-3) had some success running the ball out of spread formations, with Ty Johnson leading the way with 83 yards on 16 carries. They dented a defense that was allowing a Big Ten-best 78.8 rushing yards a game for 143 yards overall on 35 carries.

NO. 18 MICHIGAN ST. 17,

INDIANA 9

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Quarterback Brian Lewerke thew a 10-yard touchdown pass to Felton Davis with 5:59 remaining, and the 18th-ranked Spartans (6-1, 4-0) edged Indiana on Saturday night to become bowl eligible one season after finishing 3-9.

“I think win No. 6 is big, this year especially,” Coach Mark Dantonio said. “We got bowl eligibility, and we can now work on our next goal, which is really just finishing this, what I call phase, and getting ino November.”

Lowerke struggled for much of the game, but found Davis in the end zone to take a 10-9 lead. The Spartans forced an Indiana punt, then LJ Scott ran 18 yards for a touchdown with 1:49 remaining. Coach Tom Allen said the Hoosiers were letting the Spartans score so they could get the ball back with a chance to tie.

Indiana (3-4, 0-4) had enough time but wasn’t able to cross midfield before turning the ball over on downs.
