• Tiger Webb, a journalist with Australia's ABC Radio, called the New Zealand Parliament to find out how that country's incoming prime minister pronounces her surname but unwittingly went straight to the top, when Jacinda Ardern picked up the phone and informed Webb that her last name is pronounced "AH-durn."

• David Cline of Cordova, Tenn., an ex-Boy Scouts treasurer who pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from a Germantown troop, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service but no jail time because, a judge said, he has returned more than $95,000.

• Ines Rau, a 26-year-old French fashion model, is Playboy magazine's first transgender Playmate, appearing in the marquee spot of the magazine's November/December issue.

• Bryan Barillas of Chelsea, Mass., a 20-year-old member of the Central American street gang MS-13, pleaded guilty to providing a gun to a co-conspirator who aimed to shoot a suspected rival gang member but missed, killing a mother of three.

• Carrie South, a flower shop owner in Greensburg, Pa., said someone made off with $1,400 from the shop while she was away handing out free bouquets to veterans at a health center.

• Jennifer Kline, a 51-year-old Minnesotan who was crowned Mrs. America in 1985, was sentenced to two years of probation and 10 days of community service for transferring tags from Macy's items to clothes she already owned, then returning her newly tagged clothes to a different Macy's location for refunds.

• Kylie Kintigh, a Pennington County, S.D., sheriff's deputy, said two bear cubs that escaped from the Bear Country USA wildlife park didn't get far, in part because they seemed more interested in Kintigh and her squad car than in making a getaway.

• Austin Young, the best friend of 22-year-old Joseph Orbeso, was among many friends and relatives of Orbeso and 20-year-old Rachel Nguyen who said they believe the pair got lost while hiking in Joshua Tree National Park in California and struggled in the desert heat with little food or water before dying in what Nguyen's family called a "sympathetic murder-suicide."

• Herb Waters, a Green Bay Packers cornerback, and five other men named Herb, as well as the five former members of the Spice Girls -- for a total of 11 Herbs and Spices -- are the only Twitter accounts that KFC, the fried-chicken fast-food chain, said it has been following for about a month.
