An Arkansas man was arrested early Saturday after his ex-wife was beaten beyond recognition, the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record reported.

Police responded to an apartment complex at 132 Oak St. about 1:30 a.m. and heard a woman moaning upstairs, according to the newspaper.

Officers reportedly found Mason Robin Zeigler, 42, leaning over his ex-wife, who was sitting on the floor against a wall and mumbling incoherently.

Zeigler told police he had "messed up" the woman and admitted to beating her, the newspaper reported. Authorities noted Zeigler's hands were covered in blood, which was also splattered across his clothing, face and shoes.

The woman was reportedly barely able to sit up without falling over. Officers reported that she appeared to have difficulty breathing and remaining conscious and was throwing up blood, according to the Sentinel-Record.

The woman was "unrecognizable when compared to her driver's license photograph" due to fractures and breaks around her nose and eyes, bruising to her face and her eyes being nearly swollen shut, the newspaper reported, citing a police affidavit.

Zeigler told police that he had punched and kneed the woman as well as kicked her in the face multiple times with a steel-toed boot during an argument, the document states. He said he also knew the woman had a pacemaker, which he most likely struck during the attack, the Sentinel-Record reported.

Zeigler was being held at the Garland County jail in lieu of $7,500 bond as of Tuesday afternoon on a second-degree domestic battery charge, records show. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 4.
