State index jumps 5.51; 17 stocks gain

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, climbed 5.51 to 379.83 on Thursday.

"Equities rallied early in the day but lost momentum through the afternoon in advance of several large technology companies reporting as the materials sector outperformed and health care underperformed," said Leon Lants, managing director at Stephens Inc. in Little Rock.

Total volume for the index was 20.4 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
