A husband and wife from Northwest Arkansas have been arrested on charges related to the sexual abuse of two young children, police said.

Douglas Jay Pershing, 54, of Bella Vista faces a charge of second-degree sexual assault, according to a news release.

Tamy Lynn Pershing, 46, is being held on a charge of failure to notify by a mandated reporter given her role as a teacher. She also faces a charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.

The Bella Vista Police Department was notified Aug. 10 of a sexual abuse investigation out of Henderson, Nev., involving a 4-year-old girl and her 2-year-old sister.

The victims’ parents were listed as family friends of the Pershings.

According to the affidavit, the 4-year-old said that Douglas Pershing, a science-fiction author, touched her inappropriately around 20 different times while she was at their Bella Vista home. The girl added that her sister had also been molested.

Pershing said that the older sister had seen him naked "several times" as he got dressed and got out of the shower.

When asked if the girl had ever touched his groin area, Pershing reportedly said: "I don't think so. I'm pretty sure. No, I don't think so."

Tamy Pershing, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Arkansas Arts Academy in Rogers, reportedly walked in and noticed at least one act occurring, telling her husband to "stop and not do it again," the 4-year-old told authorities.

Both remained at the Benton County jail as of Friday evening, according to an online inmate roster. Douglas Pershing's bail has been set at $30,000. No bail was listed for Tamy Lynn Pershing.

Atleast 9 this week! There's a HUGE problem with sex crimes against children in Arkansas....lock these people away FOREVER. Long prison sentences are the only way to stop this. I hope they NEVER get out

It's hard to get a conviction solely on the testimony of a 4 year old.

Guilty until proven innocent is the way these things go, Convicted by testimony from a 4 YEAR old, Family Friends, Lives and Friendships are destroyed forever. Wait until after the Trial before you hang him anyway.

How quickly a child's life & innocence can be discarded by adults who say, "Who's going to believe a 4-year-old?" That statement is almost as sick as the person who abused these 2 little girls.

Before everyone hangs and burns these people know that Arkansas Crimes Against Children has an abysmal record of incompetency where true pedophiles are ignored and high profile people with mere accusations and no evidence are falsely accused and prosecuted. Children this young can be easily led into whatever scenario the interviewer imagines. Many years ago an entire family in Los Angeles was prosecuted for allegedly sexually abusing children even satanic ritual killing of animals at their daycare in Santa Monica. After financial and personal ruin the McMartins were finally exonerated. Dozens of parents and children in that case were positive about the abuse because the interviewers planted false memories in the children. The comments illegally leaked to the reporter in this story sound very suspicious.

When a child tells you something happened to them of this nature ...... believe them. They couldn't make this up?

Where are the children's parents in this situation? Apparently, the initial investigation of this child abuse came to the attention of the Bella Vista, Arkansas police from the police in Henderson, Nevada. Where's the rest of this story?
