State House circus

Play, celebration
A young girl spurns a fairy godmother's offer to become Cinderella and opts instead for immortality in The Immortal Katie Stewart by Allison Price, the 2017 Hendrix-Murphy Student Playwriting Contest winner at Hendrix College, 1600 Washington Ave., Conway, where a staged reading will take place, 7 p.m. Friday in Cabe Theatre. Admission is free. An audience discussion and reception will follow in Mills Lobby.
Hendrix is also marking the 40th anniversaries of the Cabe Theatre and the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language, as well as the 80th birthday of emerita theater arts professor Rosemary Henenberg, 4 p.m. Saturday in the Cabe Theatre. Douglas Blackmon (Class of '86), Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Atlanta bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal; John Churchill, former secretary of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and former Hendrix dean; and Jeanne Hensley Griggs (Class of '82), director of the Writing Center at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, will discuss the value of literature and language on the stage and in liberal arts education. Conway Deathtrap
A successful but flagging writer of theatrical thrillers and his wife devise a plot to steal a potential hit play from one of his former students in Deathtrap by Ira Levin, which Red Curtain Theatre will stage at 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday and Sept. 15-16 and 2 p.m. Sunday and Sept. 17 at the Conway Junior High School auditorium, 1815 Prince St., Conway. Sports exhibition
"Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America," focusing on sports and the role sports play in American society, will be on display Saturday-Oct. 21 at the Delta Cultural Center Visitors Center, 141 Cherry St., Helena-West Helena. The exhibition, developed by the Museum on Main Street program, a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service and state humanities councils, has been touring Arkansas since late April, with stops at the Dallas County Museum in Fordyce, the Delta Gateway Museum in Blytheville and the Cross County Historical Society in Wynne. It will be on display Oct. 28-Dec. 9 at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia and Dec. 16-Jan. 27 at the Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville.
