Jim Newberry

Where I live: My wife, Becky, and I live in a circa 1925 Max Mayer-designed house in Hillcrest. As far as I know, it is the only cottage-size house he designed in Little Rock. We wanted to retire to a smaller home in her childhood neighborhood. It's great to live in an area of friendly neighbors as well as joggers, dog walkers and casual strollers. It is an easy walk to stores and restaurants, and Allsopp Park is just across the street.

Occupation: I moved to Little Rock after working in commercial real estate and store development for a major retailer. In Little Rock, I returned to my roots as a social worker at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Last year I became a Master Gardener and now volunteer at the native plants garden at the Witt Stephens Jr. Nature Center in Riverfront Park.

My favorite space is: The patio area and pond I built at the east end of the property from flagstones I moved from the front yard as well as bricks and blocks and other debris that were scattered about the premises. It is a shady, secluded area in an otherwise sunny and open lot. I enjoy sipping coffee there with the water lilies, goldfish and an emerging brood of tadpoles. My water lily pond is not as elaborate as Monet's, but I have far fewer tourists.

If I could make one change to improve this space I would: Make the backyard a little larger, but alas, the neighbors already have their house there.
