Cantrell Gallery founder Helen Scott hosted a gathering at her Talmage Drive home the night of Aug. 31 for the Contemporaries membership group of the Arkansas Arts Center.
Members enjoyed light snacks and beer and wine served by her grandson, Christian Huisman, and toured the house chock-full of art. Scott's daughter, Cindy Scott-Huisman, and son-in-law, Clarke Huisman, led the tours.
The multilevel two-bedroom house was uniquely built by Scott and her late husband, Norman, to accommodate all their collections and pastimes. Norman Scott wanted his own hideaway kitchen where he could "make a mess, splash spaghetti sauce on the walls if he wanted to," Clarke Huisman said.
Dozens of framed family photos taken between 1984 and 2010 by famed photographer Andrew Kilgore filled the walls of an upstairs loft. Other works included pieces by the late Scott, Warren Criswell and a suite of original prints by Theo Tobiasse. One would be hard-pressed to find an empty space on the walls of the Scott home.
The Contemporaries group is made up of young art enthusiasts between the ages of 21 and 45-ish who wish to expand their knowledge and appreciation of the arts. Members enjoy numerous opportunities throughout the year to develop a more informed appreciation of art through exclusive tours of the arts center, private homes and local galleries. Dues are $30 each or $45 per couple. Members must also be members of the arts center to join.
