Meeting to address nuke site cleanup

FAYETTEVILLE -- A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Strickler Fire Department to discuss ongoing cleanup of a nonworking nuclear reactor site southwest of Fayetteville.

Officials from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and Utah-based cleanup company Energy Solutions will discuss work done at the Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor site, which ceased operations in the 1970s.

The U.S. Department of Energy last year awarded a $10.5 million cleanup grant to UA, owner of the site about 20 miles southwest of Fayetteville and near the Strickler community.

A partial demolition has taken place.
