North Little Rock police say a woman died and an officer was hospitalized after a fire at an apartment complex Saturday morning.

Sgt. Brian Dedrick said it happened at Eastgate Terrace on East 19th Street.

Before arriving at the scene, officers were told that there may be a person in a wheelchair inside the apartment. The door to the apartment was locked, Dedrick said, and officers could not open it until North Little Rock firefighters arrived.

A woman inside was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Dedrick did not know the cause of death, and he said the woman's name is not being released yet.

An officer who inhaled smoke was also taken to the hospital, where he received treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.

As of Saturday morning, firefighters were still putting out the fire, Capt. John Pflasterer said.

The cause is not yet known.
