The Pulaski County sheriff’s office says it has placed a deputy on paid administrative leave after he was arrested in Saline County on Sunday morning.

According to an arrest report, Saline County sheriff’s deputies found a man receiving treatment for a “severe laceration” under his left eye when they arrived at an address in the 1130 block of Brookhaven Court in Alexander about 1:30 a.m.

The 45-year-old told authorities he was injured during an argument with Daniel Cantwell, 27, about 20 minutes before they arrived.

When the man tried to walk toward his vehicle, he said, the sheriff’s deputy followed him, threatened to kill him and hit him in the face, according to the report. A female witness reportedly told authorities that Cantwell grabbed her shirt during the dispute.

Cantwell was arrested and taken to Saline County jail, where he remained with no bail set Monday afternoon. He faces charges of second-degree battery, first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree assault.

The 45-year-old, who was taken to a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, has since been discharged, according to a news release from the Saline County sheriff’s office.

Lt. Cody Burk said the Pulaski County sheriff’s office has started its own internal investigation.
