Investigators believe arson the cause of fire that severely damaged Arkansas post office

A fire that caused severe damage to an Arkansas post office, closing it until further notice, was the result of arson, investigators say.

The Rosie post office at 39 Capshaw Road caught fire Saturday night, the U.S. Postal Service said.

The building suffered extensive damage to the lobby and roof, U.S. Postal Inspection Service team leader Mona Hernandez wrote in an email. All mail was recovered with minimal smoke and water damage, she said.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward for any information about the fire, which is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday. The people responsible could face federal charges, including destruction of government property and destruction of letter boxes, Hernandez said.

Until the Rosie post office reopens, customers can pick up their mail at a nearby post office located at 209 Main St. in Oil Trough, a news release said. The offices are about 7.5 miles apart.

Both towns are in Independence County in the state's northeast.
