Arkansas police officer fired over fuel-card buys

JONESBORO -- Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott fired a Jonesboro police officer Monday after learning the officer had used a city fuel card to purchase gasoline for his personal vehicle.

Patrolman Justin Thompson was terminated after a personnel investigation revealed the officer used a Jonesboro fleet fuel card to buy gas for his own vehicle "on several occasions."

Thompson had been with the Jonesboro Police Department since Dec. 1, 2015.

"This violation of public trust is unacceptable," Elliott said in a news release issued by the city. "Criminal conduct will not be tolerated within the Jonesboro Police Department."

Investigators are collecting evidence to determine the cost of the fuel Thompson purchased with the card, said Capt. David McDaniel, a spokesman for the Police Department. Once completed, the investigation will be given to 2nd Judicial Circuit Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
