Struck on the head by thief, man says

A 67-year-old man told investigators he was struck in the head and robbed early Friday.

The man told Little Rock police officers it happened around 1:30 a.m. as he was eating french fries near a downtown church, according to a report. The man said he was struck from behind with a brick by an assailant who made off with his wallet.

The officers noted that they found the man near the parking deck at 2nd and Main streets, but he couldn't provide details about precisely where the attack happened and became "agitated" when questioned about it.

The man, who suffered a cut to the head, was taken to UAMS Medical Center for treatment.

No suspects were named on the report, and no arrest had been made at the time it was written.

Truck driver swings machete at robber

A truck driver who had been sleeping in his tractor-trailer used a machete to fight off a robber after the assailant awakened him and threatened him with a tire iron early Wednesday, police said.

The driver, a 57-year-old man from Atlanta, told officers he was asleep in his truck parked on the 11000 block of Barton Road in North Little Rock when he heard the door unlock and open slightly after 1 a.m. Then a man armed with a tire iron climbed into the truck's cab and demanded the driver's wallet, according to a North Little Rock Police Department report.

The victim said he grabbed his machete and swung it at the robber, causing him to drop the tire iron, according to the report.

The robber and a woman who was seen standing near the door reportedly fled east on Barton Road after the struggle.

The truck driver told police he believed he cut himself with his own machete, then noticed his log book containing his permit and registration was missing. He said the robber or the woman may have taken it because it looked like a wallet, according to the report.

The man said the robber was not injured during the struggle, but he left behind the black tire iron along with an earring stud and a red-and-blue hat.
