MCNEIL -- A Mr. Smith, about 65 years old, first name unknown, died on the train between Haynesville and Homer, La., yesterday. The body was brought here and was sent to Homer. The man had said he had a sister at Homer, but did not give her name. Diligent inquiry in Homer and surrounding country failed of results. It is believed that the man may have meant Houma, La., when he bought a ticket for Homer. About eight dollars were found in his pockets and he wore a diamond ring, but there was nothing to indicate his residence.

MENA -- A single-engine plane attempting an emergency landing on state Highway 88 about 15 miles east of Mena crashed Wednesday afternoon, but the three men aboard escaped injury. Authorities said the pilot, George L. White of Wichita, Kan., tipped a wing of the plane to miss a highway sign while landing and a gust of wind caused the aircraft to crash. The wing and fuselage section of the Commanche 180 were heavily damaged.

• A North Little Rock police officer who chased a dog into a burning building found about 4 1/2 pounds of marijuana, police said. The dog escaped unharmed, but its owners, Thomas J, Zarlingo, 54, and Tammy Guest, 31, were arrested on several drug charges, police said. "Their own dog led officers to the marijuana," said Lt. Charles Peckat. "I guess a dog is not always your best friend." Authorities believe the blaze, discovered about 4 p.m. Friday, was started by a candle left burning in the bathroom while Zarlingo and Guest were out of the house at 2010 Franklin St.
