Open house today at Laman library

William F. Laman Public Library will have an open house today at its main branch, 2801 Orange St. in North Little Rock, in observance of National Library Week that runs through Saturday.

There will be cookies, coffee and treats for visitors from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today. Tours of the library will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

At the library system's Argenta Branch, 420 Main St., patrons will be entered into a surprise drawing each time they check out materials Monday-Saturday this week.

St. Joseph Center sets event in May

St. Joseph Center of Arkansas will observe its 10th anniversary and celebrate spring planting at its third annual Lettuce Grow fundraiser next month.

The event will be from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. May 4 at the historic St. Joseph Center, 6800 Camp Robinson Road, North Little Rock.

Lettuce Grow will feature dinner with chef Margie Raimondo of Southern Table, along with craft beer and tours of the 56,000-square-foot building, its 63-acre farm and its new greenhouses. There will also be live music, a silent auction of art by local artists and interaction with the center's farm animals.

Lettuce Grow supports the nonprofit St. Joseph's mission to preserve the former St. Joseph orphanage, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Advance tickets for the event are $50 through centralarkansastickets.com. Tickets will be $65 at the door.

Mini Maker Faire deadline April 21

The entry deadline is April 21 to participate in the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub's fourth annual North Little Rock Mini Maker Faire.

The Mini Maker Faire will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 12 at the North Shore Riverwalk. Admission will be free.

Anyone wanting to participate or exhibit can respond at northlittlerock.makerfaire.com.

The event combines science, art and technology to celebrate "do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering," according to a news release.

Described as "part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new," the event is meant to attract participation by tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, entrepreneurs, engineers, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors.
