April 10, 1918
HARTFORD -- As a result of an explosion at 10 o'clock this morning at the bottom of an 180-foot shaft in the Hartford Fuel Company's mine, two miles from here, three men are dead, one probably fatally injured and six seriously hurt. The explosion is believed to have been caused by a "windy shot," fired by Charles Franklin and John Vittatoe. Following the accident, the injured miners were brought to this city in automobiles, where medical attention was given.

• About 40 Negro leaders met with the City Manager Board Tuesday at City Hall at the invitation of Mayor Borchert to discuss community problems. One suggestion was that a Board member should resign and a Negro be appointed to succeed him to prove the Board's good faith in improving community relations. The Board also was told that the city needed to provide more jobs for Negroes, adopt an open housing ordinance, provide parks in Negro neighborhoods, change attitudes on the police, and appoint a citizens' advisory committee to review police actions.

• A two-year-old case in which Maumelle infant Jowad Akel was found dead by strangulation in his crib took up the second day of testimony Friday before Pulaski County's grand jury. After testimony by police, physicians and the baby's family, the jurors discussed the case about 40 minutes and then adjourned without deliberating on the possibility of an indictment. Prosecutor Mark Stodola released the witnesses from their subpoenas, but said the case was not finished.

• For admittedly setting fire to the now-defunct Bada Bing Grille south of Little Rock as part of a plot to collect insurance money, a Jacksonville man was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison. The fire, set on June 20, 2006, destroyed the nightclub on 145th Street that was named after a strip club for mob figures on HBO's The Sopranos and had become a headache for the Pulaski County sheriff's office. In pleading guilty on Aug. 28, 2007, to a charge of conspiracy to commit arson, Damon Lamont Thomas, 34, said that the club's manager and longtime friend Dennis Dokes paid him to burn the club in hopes that Dokes' mother, who owned the club, could collect on a $2 million insurance policy.
