3 BEETHOVEN AND BLUE JEANS

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will don denim and play music by Ludwig van in its annual "Beethoven and Blue Jeans" concert, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday, Robinson Center Performance Hall, 426 W. Markham St. at Broadway, Little Rock. Orchestra members and conductor Philip Mann will wear jeans and encourage patrons to likewise do so. The program of works inspired by visual art -- Finding Rothko for Chamber Orchestra by ASO composer of the year Adam Schoenberg; Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral" -- is part of the orchestra's Canvas Festival, combining visual arts with the performance of live symphonic music. Impressionist painter Barry Thomas will create a work on-stage in real time. A pre-concert Beer & Brats street party -- 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m. Sunday in front of Robinson -- features free brats, local beer and music from the Episcopal Collegiate School Steel Band. The doors are opening at the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Designer House XXIV, Friday-May 13. Troops from all over the United States are expected in Helena-West Helena from Friday-Sunday as the Delta Cultural Center hosts the 155th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Helena.
