Lit Fest scheduled

The Bentonville Youth Literature Festival takes place Friday and Saturday and celebrates reading, writing and creativity. In its fourth year, BYLF is presented by Bentonville Public Library and the Bentonville Library Foundation and features national and regional authors, poets, illustrators and artists of popular youth literature.

BYLF is an “Official Kick-Off Event” for Children’s Book Week. Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. This May marks the 99th anniversary of Children’s Book Week. The theme for this year’s celebration is “One World, Many Stories.”

As part of BYLF and Children’s Book Week, children will have an opportunity to vote for the Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards, the only national book award voted on solely by kids and teens. Voting ballots and a display of the Book Finalists are located in the Children’s Department of Bentonville Public Library. Kids and teens are invited to vote at BPL through May 5.

All kids and teens attending Saturday’s festival events at the library will receive a free 2018 Children’s Book Week activity poster designed by Jillian Tamaki (while supplies last). They will also have access online at everychildareader.net to original bookmarks created by five of today’s most innovative children’s book illustrators and an original middle-grade “One World, Many Stories” graphic novel.

BYLF is also celebrating the Charlie May Simon Book Award with a guest appearance by Ellen Airgood. Airgood’s most recent book, The Education of Ivy Blake, was on the 2017-18 Charlie May Simon Children’s Book Award Reading List. Airgood’s program, “Ask the Author,” will take place in the Walmart Community Room of Bentonville Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Charlie May Simon Children’s Book Award for children’s literature has been presented annually since 1971 to an author whose book has been selected through a vote taken by Arkansas schoolchildren in grades four through six. The purpose of the award is to promote better reading for children and to recognize Mrs. John Gould Fletcher, an outstanding Arkansas author who wrote under the pen name Charlie May Simon. The Charlie May Simon Book Award is managed by the Arkansas Center for the Book at the Arkansas State Library.

All library programs and Festival events are free and open to everyone. Registration is not required.

WRMC offers stroke event

The Washington Regional Medical Center is partnering with several area agencies to provide education and awareness to help end stroke, a leading cause of serious, longterm disability and death. Area residents of all ages are invited to attend this free, family-friendly event from 4:30 to 7 p.m. May 3 at Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.

Those who attend can enjoy free food, games and activities centered around stroke education and awareness. Central EMS will be there with an ambu lance that children can explore, and American Heart Association will be there with its friendly costumed mascot, Hearty. There will be health information booths and giveaways.

Education and awareness are key to ending stroke, since about 80 percent of strokes are preventable.
