Earnings report

Companies reporting quarterly earnings Tuesday included:

Caterpillar Inc., the maker of heavy equipment and machinery, a profit of $1.67 billion, or $2.74 a share, up from $199 million, or 32 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 31 percent to $12.86 billion. Caterpillar shares fell $9.55 to close at $144.44.

PulteGroup Inc., the Atlanta-based homebuilder, a profit of $171 million, or 59 cents a share, up from $92 million, or 28 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 21 percent to $1.9 billion. Shares rose 83 cents to close at $29.65.

3M Co., the maker of Post-it notes, industrial coatings and ceramics, a profit of $602 million, or 98 cents a share, down from $1.2 billion, or $2.16 a share, a year ago. Revenue was $8.28 billion. Shares fell $14.75 to close at $201.13.

Verizon Communications Inc., the largest U.S. mobile-phone carrier, a profit of $4.7 billion, or $1.11 a share, up from $3.6 billion, or 84 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 6.6 percent to $31.8 billion. Shares rose $1.01 to close at $49.67.
