School news: The latest accomplishments for local students

Southern Arkansas University

Students in the theater program at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia recently performed Hairspray on the school campus.

Local students involved included Timothy "Bodee" Starr of Van Buren, who played "Wilbur Turnblad"; Simon Tursky of Van Buren, who portrayed "Fender"; Darby Taylor of Barling, who played "Tracy Turnblad"; and Mikayla McCoy of Rogers, an assistant stage manager.

Eastern Oregon University

Nick Vang of Siloam Springs has been named to the winter dean's list at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Wheaton College

Wheaton (Ill.) College women's chorale toured Minnesota and Iowa during spring break. Jacyn Gould and Alexandra Gould, both of Fayetteville, are members of women's chorale. During the week-long tour, women's chorale performed public concerts, lead worship for several church services and performed at area high schools.

Missouri Southern State University

Brittany Smola of Bentonville, Alison Denver of Gravette and Hunter Jamieson of Hindsville were recently initiated into the Phi Eta Sigma honor society chapter during a ceremony April 12 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. To qualify for membership, full-time first-year students must attain a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average.

University of Wyoming

Ryan Brooks of Rogers was elected as a senator for Associated Students of University of Wyoming in Laramie. Senators serve on various committees and represent their colleges in budgetary and policy matters affecting all UW students.

Arkansas State University

Jordon Bright of Bella Vista, Jason Couch of Van Buren and Lisa Turner of Fayetteville were initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Several local students of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock department of mathematics and statistics participated April 6 in a Calculus Bowl, with 40 minutes to answer the 15 questions. Shazeena Ashraf and Zach Smith, both of Fort Smith, placed third, and Robert Hill of Bella Vista placed sixth. The top 10 received $20 cash prizes.

Arkansas State University

The college of sciences and mathematics at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro recognized outstanding graduating students during its annual awards ceremony. The departmental awards were presented to graduating students in each degree program, who excelled in scholarship, leadership and service to the department.

Alfonso Arteaga of Berryville received the biological sciences award. Michael "Jason" Newell of Springdale received the graduate student award.
