DeChambeau out front

Bryson DeChambeau kept pouring in birdies even as everyone around him went the other direction and wound up with a four-shot lead Saturday in The Northern Trust at Paramus, N.J. DeChambeau closed with two birdies for an 8-under 63 that gave him firm control of the opening FedEx Cup playoff event. It might even make it hard for Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk to ignore him when he makes his four wild-card selections a week from Tuesday. DeChambeau was at 16-under 197 and had a four-shot lead over Keegan Bradley, who had a 62. Tiger Woods made a 6-foot birdie putt on his last hole for a 3-under 68. That gives him seven birdies for 54 holes. DeChambeau made nine birdies on Saturday alone and is 13 shots ahead of Woods. Adam Scott birdied three of his last four holes to shoot 70. Brooks Koepka, who shared the 36-hole lead with Jamie Lovemark, had a 13-hole stretch in the middle of his round with 3 bogeys and 10 pars. He shot 72 and fell seven shots behind. Dustin Johnson, who started the day tied with DeChambeau, added a double bogey to a week that already included two triple bogeys. Johnson birdied his last hole for a 72 to fall nine shots back. Jordan Spieth finally got his putter going and shot a 64, leaving him seven shots behind but in a tie for seventh. Austin Cook (Jonesboro, Arkansas Razorbacks) is 3 under after a 68. Andrew Landry (Razorbacks) is 3 over after a 74.

Two tied at top

Kevin Sutherland shot a 12-under 60 on Saturday in the Boeing Classic at Snoqualmie, Wash., birdieing the final four holes to finish a stroke off his own PGA Tour Champions record. Needing an eagle on the par-5 18th for another 59, Sutherland made a birdie after missing the green with a 3-iron approach. He was tied for the lead with Ken Tanigawa at 14-under 130. Sutherland played the back nine in 7-under 29, also birdieing Nos. 10, 12 and 13. He opened with three pars in cold conditions, then birdied No. 4 and Nos. 6-9. Tanigawa shot 64, closing with a birdie in a back-nine 30. Glen Day (Little Rock) was tied for 21st at 5 under after a 69.

Henderson by 1

Brooke Henderson took the lead into the final round of the Canadian Women's Open, fighting through gusting wind Saturday at Wascana Country Club in Regina, Saskatchewan, in pursuit of a breakthrough home victory. The 20-year-old Canadian star shot a 2-under 70 in clear and cool conditions to reach 14-under 202. Jocelyne Bourassa is the only Canadian to win the national championship, accomplishing the feat in 1973 at Montreal Municipal in the inaugural La Canadienne. Nasa Hataoka of Japan and American Angel Yin were a stroke back. Hataoka had a 69, and the long-hitting Yin shot 71. Top-ranked Sung Hyun Park was 12 under after a 70. Su Oh (69) and Austin Ernst (70) were 11 under, and three-time champion Lydia Ko (68) topped the group at 10 under. Gaby Lopez (Arkansas Razorbacks) did not make the cut.

Knous, Streb out front

Jim Knous birdied the first five holes and shot a 6-under 65 on Saturday for a share of the third-round lead with Robert Streb in the Web.com Tour Finals-opening Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship at Columbus, Ohio. Knous matched Streb at 12-under 201 on Ohio State University's Scarlett Course. Streb, the second-round leader, birdied the par-4 18th for a 68. Joseph Bramlett (65) and Denny McCarthy (68) were two strokes back, and Seth Reeves (65), Curtis Luck (68) and Matt Jones (69) were 9 under. Six-time PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan was tied for 22nd at 4 under after a 72. Sebastian Cappelen (Arkansas Razorbacks) was tied for 19th at 5 under after a 70. Taylor Moore (Razorbacks) was 3 under after a 69.

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington and Andrea Pavan shot flawless 7-under 65s on Saturday to share the lead after the third round of the Czech Masters. Pep Angles (Central Arkansas) was 4 under after a 72.

Medvedev a winner

Daniil Medvedev beat Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday in the Winston-Salem Open for his second career ATP World Tour title. Medvedev, 22, ranked No. 57 in the world and unseeded in the event, didn't drop a set in six matches in the final U.S. Open tuneup event. The eighth-seeded Johnson came up short in a bid to become the only player this year to win titles on three different surfaces. The American won the U.S. Men's Clay Court in Houston in April and the Hall of Fame event on grass in Rhode Island last month. However, Johnson failed to break Medvedev's serve on Winston-Salem's hard court.

Sabalenka takes title

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus beat Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday to win the Connecticut Open at New Haven, the final WTA tuneup before next week's U.S. Open. The 20-year-old won the first five games of the match and lost just one service game on the way to winning her first WTA premier title. Suarez Navarro, whose second-round opponent withdrew because of illness and had opponents in the quarterfinals and semifinals retire with injuries, completed just her second full match of the tournament.

Allgaier wins

Justin Allgaier won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wis., on Saturday, pulling away over the final five laps to pick up his second victory in three weeks. Allgaier held a 5.4-second advantage over second-place Matt Tifft to take a tense race filled with bumps, scrapes and spin-outs around the 14-turn course on Saturday. Daniel Hemric was third. Second behind points leader Christopher Bell coming into the weekend, Allgaier picked up his fourth victory overall this season. NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott finished 20th after coming out of retirement to take his first Xfinity ride around Road America. Gordon cleared to play

Josh Gordon, whose career has been derailed by drug and alcohol addictions, "can return to all activities, including games," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Saturday. Gordon is not expected to participate in any drills with the Cleveland Browns for a few days, but could be practicing early next week. Coach Hue Jackson said he hopes the 27-year-old receiver can play in this week's exhibition finale against Detroit and possibly in the Sept. 9 opener against Pittsburgh. Gordon returned on Aug. 24 from a three-week, self-imposed absence. He left the Browns before training camp opened to receive treatment as part of his recovery. Gordon has missed most of the past four seasons because of violations of the NFL's substance abuse program.
