Fox's The Orville debuted on Sept. 20, 2017. It will return for a new season at 7 p.m. today. The show was created by and stars Seth MacFarlane, who also created the animated series Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show, as well as movies: A Million Ways to Die in the West, Ted and Ted 2.

MacFarlane mainly voices animated characters, has a great singing voice and is a reasonably good actor, although there is something about how he purses his lips that is a distracting. He is rather handsome though.

Those familiar with Family Guy and American Dad! know well how off-color the shows can be, but the satire is wielded like the finest two-edged sword. The shows are a bit raunchy, but if you can look past that you will see some great, if not cringe-worthy storytelling.

That being said, the live-action Orville series tends to be more straight forward and relatively family friendly. Fans of elaborate movie makeup and interesting aliens should find a selection of colorful characters that include a robot and the Klingon-esque Bortus.

As for the plot line, it is set 400 years in the future and follows the U.S.S. Orville, a midlevel exploratory spaceship. While the crew faces the wonders and dangers of outer space, they also deal with the problems of everyday life. In the second season, the crew is set to meet never-before-seen aliens and face their old adversaries -- the Krill.

The ensemble cast features MacFarlane as Capt. Ed Mercer, Adrianne Palicki as his first officer and ex-wife, as well as Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J. Lee, Halston Sage, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman and Jessica Szohr. Comedian Norm MacDonald makes guest voice appearances as Yaphit, a gelatinous blob-like creature who has the hots for Dr. Claire Finn (Jerald).
