Arkansas woman fatally struck by car after trying to retrieve item on I-430, police say

A 68-year-old woman was fatally struck on Interstate 430 after she tried to retrieve an item on the highway in North Little Rock on Monday night, authorities said.

It happened shortly after 6:45 p.m. near the Crystal Hill Road exit, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Investigators say Shirley Ames of Russellville stepped into the traffic lanes to retrieve an item from the highway and was hit by a northbound Cadillac CTS. Ames died at the scene, and the driver was unhurt.

The preliminary report did not detail what the item on the highway was, and a police spokeswoman said the information likely wouldn't be available until a fuller report is completed in a few days.

Conditions at the time of the crash were reported to be clear and dry.

At least 26 people have died in traffic crashes in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
