Newcomers

The Fayetteville Newcomers Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2925 N. Old Missouri Road in Fayetteville, for coffee and a monthly program. The program this month features guest speaker Brenda Bowen Cox on "Using Music as a Healing Tool." Cox, a member of Newcomers, will explore the power of music used as an alternative therapy for spreading peace and well-being. Newcomers to the area (and established residents too) are invited.

Legion 341

Bella Vista American Legion Post 341 will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at 1889 Bella Vista Way. In addition to meetings, the post hosts "Coffee with the Commander" for members on the first and third Saturday mornings each month. On the second and fourth Saturday mornings, a breakfast buffet is available for members and the public.

Lunches at the Post are served Tuesday through Friday each week from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. These lunches are open to members and the public. Each night of the Tuesday through Friday schedule features different themes. Tuesdays are "Taco Tuesdays." Wednesdays nights are devoted to trivia contests; Thursday nights find guests enjoying karaoke challenges. Guests desiring to eat on Wednesdays and Thursdays enjoy an excellent, casual themed menu with daily specials. Friday is devoted to "Fish Friday" and appropriate special offerings are available.

Saturday evenings are dance nights open to members and the public starting at 7 p.m. These events feature local musical groups with excellent followings. Food on Saturday nights is limited to hamburgers and accompaniments from 4 until 7 p.m.

Finally, the meeting hall is available for rental to the public on an "as available" basis.

Ko-ko-ci

The Ko-ko-ci Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arkansas Archeological Survey building, 2475 N. Hatch Ave. in Fayetteville. Guest speaker will be Jamie Brandon, who will present "Looking for Leetown: Recent Archaeology at Pea Ridge National Military Park and the Upcoming 2018 Society Summer Training Program." Often referred to as "the Gettysburg of the west," the Battle of Pea Ridge was an important moment in the Civil War. It had a dramatic and lasting impact on the 19th century communities that once dotted the battlefield. Learn about the work there and the opportunities to participate June 2018.

AAUW

The Fayetteville Branch, American Association of University Women, will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Art Ventures, formerly known as Fayetteville Underground, 101 W. Mountain St. on the square in Fayetteville. Members and guests are invited to a postcard party. Postcards, pens and postage will be provided. Participants will write messages to elected officials about policies and hear about other ways to advocate for women and girls. The event is free and open to the public.

The monthly meeting of the Fleet Reserve Association and Auxiliary will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Western Sizzlin on Sunset Avenue in Springdale.

Ostomates

This support group is offered to anyone with an ostomy, preparing for an ostomy or caring for someone with an ostomy. The group will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. There will be a 1 p.m. educational meeting prior to the main meeting.

Orchids

Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. This meeting will be devoted to preparation for their eighth annual Orchid Show and Sale presented at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks in Fayetteville March 2-4.

Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend regular meetings on the third Sunday of most months. The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture.

Quilt Guild

The Modern Quilt Guild of Northwest Arkansas will hold a fundraiser at the meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Southside Church of Christ, 919 S. Dixieland Road in Rogers. Members will be destashing their sewing rooms and selling those items to benefit the guild.

Hill Hikers

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, will take a 5K or 10K paved walk in Bentonville beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 21. The walk will pass historic homes, Compton Gardens and Crystal Bridges. Meet at Casey's General Store, 100 S.E. J St. in Bentonville, between 9:30 and 10 a.m. In case of last-minute time changes or weather cancellation, check the website.

QUILT

Quilters United in Learning Together will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale. Fiber artist Dani Ives will be the speaker. Ives is known for her work with wool.

Cut-Ups

Calico Cut-Ups quilt guild will meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 at First United Methodist Church, 20 Boyce Drive in Bella Vista. The speaker will be Dianne Giannini, who will present a program about genealogy quilts.

She and several other genealogists have incorporated their love for genealogy and quilting and created the Star Spangled Banner quilt as a fundraiser to digitize the War of 1812 pensions. Giannini won the quilt in a raffle and will share information at the meeting about the Genealogy Quilters group and the story of the quilt.

There is a $5 fee for nonmembers of the guild, which helps us pay for the speaker. Yearly membership to the guild is $25. The group meets the fourth Monday of each month.

Garden Society

At the next meeting of the Flower, Garden and Nature Society of Northwest Arkansas, two orchid enthusiasts, Cathy and Steve Marak, will talk about their collection of orchids. Both have held offices in the Orchid Society of the Ozarks and they are co-chairing the Eighth Annual Orchids in the Garden Show and Sale March 2-4.

The group will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 in the Student Center at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. Social time will be at 9:30 a.m. Membership is not required for first-time visitors.

Perfect Harmony Women's Barbershop Chorus meets from 4 to 5:30 p.m. every Monday in the choir room of the United Lutheran Church of Bella vista. No previous experience or tryouts are required.
