Library offering hot spots service

William F. Laman Public Library System has partnered with wireless telephone company T-Mobile to provide hot spots that create Internet access for Wi-Fi-enabled devices at home or on-the-go, according to a library newsletter.

With so many patrons who have "cut the cord," the library has been expanding and improving its electronic resources, the newsletter said.

The hot spots are available for 14-day checkouts without renewals to adult patrons who don't have outstanding fines or lost material fees. The hot spots are limited to one per household.

More information on this and other library services is available at lamanlibrary.org.

Old Mill voted 2nd on attractions list

North Little Rock's Old Mill at T.R. Pugh Memorial Park recently placed second in voting for Best Arkansas Attraction on USA Today's 10 Best Reader's Choice Awards.

The city property at Lakewood Drive and Fairway Avenue, a popular site for photograph-taking and receptions, was briefly featured in the opening credits of the Oscar-winning film Gone With The Wind.

The Old Mill, a replica of an old water-powered gristmill, was created in 1933 by developer Justin Matthews of the Lakewood area in Park Hill. Sculptor Dionico Rodriguez designed the Old Mill's rustic details.

The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Buffalo National River led the list of the state's top sites.

Dazz & Brie is a Little Rock woman-fronted duo and band that combines "acid rock instrumentation with funky and soulful melodies," according to a library newsletter.

New visitor guide in magazine form

A magazine-format destination guide is available for free through the North Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, combining the bureau's former dining and coupon booklet and visitor's guide.

The first-year destination guide contains listings for city attractions, historic sites within North Little Rock, lodging and restaurants, art galleries, theaters, cycling and pedestrian trails, Burns Park amenities, an events calendar and other resources.

Bureau Communications Manager Stephanie Slagle redesigned the two former guides into the new format.

"By combining the two and using a magazine format, we could give it a more attractive appearance, include more editorial and photos, and organize it in a way that is more helpful to visitors," Slagle said in an email.

"This is also the first time that we've had a publication available for viewing and downloading online, which gives us an opportunity to reach visitors to our website in a new way, send information digitally to potential visitors and receive valuable tracking information," she said.

More information on city features and a downloadable version of the destination guide are available on the bureau's website at northlittlerock.org.
