Man faces manslaughter charge in I-30 crash that killed Little Rock teen, authorities say

A man has surrendered to authorities on a charge stemming from a wreck on Interstate 30 last year that resulted in the death of a Little Rock teenager.

Larry Shane Kuykendall, 43, of Amity faces one count of manslaughter, according to an arrest report from the Pulaski County sheriff’s office.

Police said Kuykendall surrendered Friday at Pulaski County District Court after a warrant was issued.

Kuykendall was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado west on I-30 around 3:35 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2017, when he crashed into the back of a 2005 Nissan Titan parked in the median, according to authorities.

The impact resulted in fatal injuries to the Nissan’s driver, 18-year-old Jorge Avalos, an Arkansas State Police report states. Three other people were reportedly hurt.

State police spokeswoman Liz Chapman said Kuykendall was determined to be at fault in the crash.

Findings of the agency’s crash investigation were turned over to the prosecutor’s office, where charges were filed, Chapman said.

Travel conditions at the time of the wreck were listed as clear and dry.

In July, Kuykendall pleaded no contest to a charge of driving while intoxicated related to a March 19 offense, according to court records in Garland County.

Kuykendall’s name did not appear in online records for the Pulaski County jail as of Monday morning. He has a court date set for April 2.
