3A-5 BOYS

Glen Rose dispatches Episcopal Collegiate

Glen Rose used hot mid-game shooting to hold off Episcopal Collegiate 66-55 to win the 3A-5 tournament Friday night on the Wildcats' home floor.

The victory earned the Beavers the top seed in next week's regional at Rose Bud.

Trailing 19-16 with 4:30 left in the half, the Beavers closed the second quarter by hitting their final seven shots to take a 30-23 halftime advantage.

Glen Rose (13-14) hit six of its first eight shots in the third quarter and built a 44-27 lead.

"We have a bunch of kids who come to the gym in the morning, at lunch, ever chance they get, to shoot,'' Coach Devin Jones said. "Our shooting has gotten better little by little. It was the culmination of a lot of hard work. I think we earned it."

The Wildcats (12-17) trimmed the deficit to 47-35 by the end of the quarter.

Episcopal Collegiate cut the lead to 58-55 with 1:13 to play, but the Wildcats missed their last five shots. Glen Rose was 4 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final seconds.

Brayden Lyons, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, led Glen Rose with 25 points. Noah Ellis had 14 points, Zane Hardage scored 11 and Jarrod Rogers pitched in 10.

"When you work really hard it is easy to get hot,'' said Jones. "It's hard to game plan against a team that is so good like Episcopal. We wanted to come in and be aggressive. We knew they were going to press us a lot so we wanted to make sure we took care of the ball and rebounded well."

Che Smith led the Wildcats with 19 points, Treylon Payne scored 15 and Graham Gordon chipped in 11.
