Boozman takes note of malaria problem

U.S. Sen. John Boozman spoke Tuesday at the annual Malaria Champions Breakfast. The Republican from Rogers serves on the Senate Caucus on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Malaria isn't a major health problem in the U.S. any more. Roughly 1,700 cases are reported in this country each year; most of those are people who were infected while overseas. But internationally, malaria takes a devastating toll. In 2016, there were 216 million cases, resulting in 445,000 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Boozman also had several visitors during the week. He met Tuesday with Arkansans who had traveled to Washington for the American Medical Association's National Advocacy Conference. Wednesday, he visited with a contingent of rice farmers, Arkansans who participated in the USA Rice Government Affairs Conference. Thursday, he talked with University of Arkansas at Monticello students about undergraduate research and the Higher Education Act. First passed in 1965 and updated repeatedly since then, the act governs financial-aid programs as well as other aspects of postsecondary education.
