CAC shuts down Riverview in second quarter

CAC 65, RIVERVIEW 48

SEARCY -- Christyn Williams scored 29 points and Jenna Davis added 20 as Central Arkansas Christian held Riverview to six points in the second quarter in a 65-48 victory in the District 4A-2 girls final Saturday at Riverview.

The Lady Mustangs (30-1) are the No. 1 team in Class 4A. Riverview (22-8) suffered its second loss to CAC this season, both of them on the Lady Raiders' home court.

Three-point goals — Riverview 5 (Smith 3, Jiles 1, Broad 1); CAC 4 (Dillard 2, Davis 1, Williams 1). Team fouls — Riverview 15, CAC 16. Fouled out — None.

Although the Lady Mustangs won by 17, Coach Steve Quattlebaum said he was worried about the game until it was over.

"We came here back in November and we had beaten them by six or seven," he said. "In that one, we had a big lead and we let them come back and made it real close there at the end. We did that several games after that where we got a big lead and they came back on us. Until that horn went off, I was worried."

CAC held a two-point edge after the first quarter, 17-15, but five of Riverview's points came from Abbie Jiles at the free-throw line, which Quattlebaum said was his biggest disappointment of the game.

"I thought we fouled too much, and we're not a team that fouls too much," he said. "But we've had a lot of fouls called on us up here this week. I hate to see them parade to the foul line, but they are good players, they drive hard to the basket."

The Lady Raiders hit 13 of 19 shots from the line.

Williams allowed the rest of the team to get going with the offense early, not scoring until she made a turnaround jumper with six seconds left in the quarter.

The second quarter was a different story. Williams hit the first of five field goals in the second quarter at the 6:53 mark, then the Lady Mustangs reeled off another 18 points and held Riverview to just two three-pointers -- one each from Parker Smith and Alexis Broadway -- for a 37-21 lead at the half.

Free-throw shooting and fouls continued to be a problem for CAC in the second half. Riverview hit 6 of 8 in the third quarter while CAC made a single free throw in four attempts.

"We didn't shoot free throws too well tonight," Quattlebaum said of his team's 8-of-17 effort.

Williams was 4 of 11 at the line, which is unlike her, he said.

"She did that back in November, but she doesn't do that very often, normally hitting 75 percent," he said. "If it's late in the game, she does even better in crunch time."

Jiles led Riverview with 16, hitting 9 of 9 from the line. Smith and Broadway each had 10.
