Rutledge receives role model award

The Gaines House presents the Sandra Wilson Cherry Award to a woman they consider a role model to their residents. On Feb. 8, Attorney General Lesley Rutledge was honored with the award at a dinner in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Library.

Sharon Vogelpohl, who served as the evening's emcee, explained that the mission of the Gaines House was to provide a safe and supportive transitional home for homeless women with emotional, mental or physical disabilities.

Former Gaines House resident Pat Jones told the audience, "Sometimes life just knocks us down and we just need help."

Jones, who has been in her own residence since 2016, explained, "I believe the success that I've had since I've left the Gaines House is because of what they've taught me and the love they gave me."

John Cherry presented the award that was named for his late wife, who was a former Gaines House board president, volunteered on several local boards, served as an assistant United States Attorney and as president of the Arkansas Bar Association.

Rutledge noted that Sandra Cherry was a leader who had a servant's heart. "To receive this award tonight is a true honor."
