Arkansas woman, 35, killed when vehicle crashes into Department of Transportation truck parked along highway

A 35-year-old Monticello woman died Tuesday when the vehicle she was driving crashed into an Arkansas Department of Transportation dump truck along a U.S. highway in Arkansas, authorities said.

It happened about 1 p.m. on U.S. 65 in Lake Village, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Melissa A. Forrest was driving a 2012 Toyota north when the front of her vehicle struck the back of a dump truck that was parked on the shoulder, the report said.

Forrest suffered fatal injuries. No one else was listed as being hurt.

Danny Straessle, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, said the crew was repairing potholes in the area when the crash happened. No one was in the dump truck.

"It unfortunately happens more than people realize," Straessle said of cars hitting parked department vehicles, though he noted most of the collisions don't result in fatalities.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

At least 38 people have died in traffic crashes in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
